Many people pass by this one-eared stray cat on the street and fail to take him in, but 15-year-old Barnaby finally waits for someone who would love and care for him.
This well-worn cat, found to be 15 years old, was found on the street in New Jersey (USA). The cat was skinny and had one defective or frostbitten ear. When he was taken to the shelter, the veterinarians quickly realized that he did not belong there. He needs constant care and love.
“This super affectionate guy should not spend his years in a shelter,” says one of the employees of Voorhees Animal Orphanage.
So they decided to look for a family for him through social networks. His photo and story quickly spread online until veterinarian Ed Sheehan, and his wife finally took him in.
Because they are aware of the trouble, an older animal can pose – such as health issues and money problems – Dr. Sheehan and his wife took in this cat. They saw his potential and made sure he found a warm, loving home.
“He rounds all the corners as if he’s scared to miss a spot. Later at night, he sits on my lap and watches me complete the paperwork correctly,” says Rachel, a veterinarian from Sheehan Clinic. “We give him antibiotics, and his condition seems to be improving. He’s even gained a little weight.”
Barnaby may be getting older, but he still waits patiently to get love from his new family – and they will never let him down. Despite his age and health issues, Barnaby is living his final years with dignity and care.
Barnaby sometimes doesn’t have a strong appetite and will refuse to eat, so the nurse feeds him exceptional cat food with vitamins in smaller portions using a spoon. Additionally, Barnaby’s eyesight could be better because he is old.
“It’s old, but we make sure he feels loved and cared for here. He’s a happy boy,” his wife said. “Our goal is to keep him healthy and happy for as long as possible. No one knows what kind of hardships he went through in the past, but now we all love him and want to take care of him.”
Barnaby proves that older animals can still find someone who will love them and care for them. His story demonstrates the importance of senior animal adoption. The Sheehan is a testament to how much love can be given to an old pet, no matter its ailment.
