There are times when a person is powerless. Then their pets come to their aid. They offer comfort in times of sadness, protection during moments of fear, and companionship during loneliness.
No matter what challenges a person may face, their pets are always there by their side, offering unconditional love and support. They, indeed, are a person’s best friend. The following stories prove the importance of dogs in our lives.
Story 1
A blizzard once hit Kalmykia and caused 400 sheep to disappear. For months, people searched for them but couldn’t find them anywhere. When everyone lost hope, the sheep were finally found alive and well.
It turns out that four dogs had been guarding them the whole time, keeping them safe from predators and helping them survive in such harsh conditions. The dogs barely managed to stay alive, catching mice and gophers to eat. But they never abandoned the flock of sheep, not even when lambs were born during that time.
Story 2
St. Bernard located their monastery in the Alps, where they bred a type of dog used to rescue mountain climbers who often got lost.
This breed (now known as Saint Bernard) was greatly loved by many because, over time, they selflessly saved an innumerable amount of human lives–even though it put their safety at risk.
In France, there is even a monument in memory of one of these heroic rescuers. The events associated with this dog took place long ago. According to one account, Barry (the animal’s nickname) pulled forty people out from under the rubble of snow until 41 took his life.
People tell the following version of this story. Even though a heavy snowstorm was going on, the dogs ran off in search of people. Unfortunately, they were still looking for someone. They came back home – all except for Barry.
He had this feeling that someone needed his help urgently. As it turns out, his intuition didn’t fail him; he found a man in the mountains and was about to die under the piles of snow.
The man woke up as the dog began to awaken the man by licking his face and looking into his eyes. Seeing only a Saint Bernard, he mistook it for a wolf and proceeded to stab the innocent animal fatally.
Story 3
A dog named Balth lived in the last century and had two monuments erected in his honor, one in New York City and the other in Alaska. A diphtheria epidemic sweeping through NYC took many children’s lives.
The owner of the best dog sled team attempted to get vaccines because he had the best team of dogs, but they could not make it happen. They succumbed to the cold weather and fell into the snow on the way back, eyes reading ‘sorry.’
The only dog who kept going was Balth. His owner strapped a bag of vaccines to his neck and sent him to the village.
As the man lay frozen on the ground, he heard someone licking his cheek and thought it was a near-death experience. However, everything that followed was reality – the dog had run the errand and returned to save its owner.
He was later found frozen to death. His body was still curled up next to the man.
Balth’s sacrifice allowed countless children to survive and live long lives, and he will always be remembered as a hero.
There are more than enough such stories, and they prove that dogs are our best friends. They can love and protect us unconditionally, even sacrificing their own lives if necessary.
These dogs will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we should never take them for granted. They deserve all the love and appreciation in the world.
