When Nikki Martinez came across a group of kittens struggling to survive in a cat colony, one kitten, in particular, caught her eye.
This kitten was timid and very afraid of people. Nikki quickly realized that this kitten would need some extra TLC if she were going to make it through the TNR program.
Sugar was always sitting in the corner. When people approached her, she started hissing and scratching. She was afraid of any action in her direction.
So Nikki started hugging Sugar (as she was named) regularly during the day. Not used to such attention, Sugar was initially very anxious but slowly started to warm up to her new foster mom. To make the process easier, Nikki also offered her wet food from her hands.
After living in a cat colony for a year, Sugar has finally adjusted to living in a home. After several weeks of regular hugs, she finally had a breakthrough.
Sugar ran over to her foster mom and played with him. Nikki was shocked at how far the cocky kitten had come in such a short time.
“For weeks, she sat terrified, avoiding my gaze and shaking when I walked into the room. For the first time tonight, she played with me! We’re making progress!” Nikki enthused.
Sugar is still a little shy, but she has come far thanks to Nikki’s patience and love. We are so happy that this sweet kitten finally has a forever home!
To increase her trust in people, the only thing she kept getting was love and lots of hugs. Constant attention was the best way to overcome all the fears she still had.
