When Sandy Lawson saw a photo of Spero on Facebook, she knew she had to rescue him. This poor cat had been wandering around in the cold, suffering from frostbite and an eye infection. Lawson brought Spero to her home in Ottawa, Ontario, and slowly nursed him back to health. Despite his many health problems, Spero is a happy and healthy cat thanks to Lawson’s love and care.
The moving family left Spero, a cat that used to be their favorite but now has become useless. Behind, he wandered lost and homeless around the neighborhood.
He ate what he could find and warmed himself where there was an opportunity. And the opportunity was rare. Mostly – these were cardboard boxes near garbage cans.
“When I saw the cat’s condition, I thought, ‘I need this cat.’ Bring him to Ottawa,” Lawson says.
His coat was so clumped and tight to his body that it had almost been turned into felt. It beggared belief.
“This cat arrived exhausted. I don’t think the cat would have lived longer.”
One by one, his various pains and conditions were relieved. However, Spero will always live with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a disease that leaves his immune system vulnerable.
“He eats every meal like it’s his last,” Lawson says. “He attacks it like he’s not going to eat again. It will take him a long time to get over it.”
But Spero’s scars are only on the outside. Despite the ordeal, his good heart is entirely intact.
“He is the sweetest cat I’ve ever had,” Lawson says. “He’s gentle and loving.”
